    Lecture at To Be Real — February 28, 2020
To Be Real, the performative-musical program of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, examines club culture and its emancipatory potential, and explores the relationship between politics, nightlife, and contemporary art, from the queer roots of electronic dance music in the 1970s to the recent techno-protests on the streets of global metropolises. What is ‘dance for freedom’ and why do we now need it more than ever?

Conversation: Cancelling the toxicity in cancel culture — October 7, 2020

What started out as a vigilante strategy for bringing justice and accountability to powerful people who previously had been immune to any consequences for their action, is increasingly becoming an unreflective method for bullying within various communities. For several decades, socio-political observers have been discussing the exacerbation of a “fracturing of the Left”. This panel will investigate identity politics’ role in perpetuating this fracturing, and investigate cancel-culture’s role in deepening identitarian divides. Lou Drago will introduce briefly their strategy to enact intersectional affinities through a process called Radical Sociability, before diving into a discussion with philosopher and writer Ben Burgis, artist and experimental composer Richard Kennedy, and Natalie Wynn, known from her Youtube channel ContraPoints, where she explores the topics of politics, gender, race and philosophy. Together they will share experiences and ideas as to why the “Left” have so readily taken up the oppressors’ tools, and how we might combat this to encourage solidarity and empathy instead of doing capital’s divisive work for it.

Lecture at La Casa Encendida&#38;nbsp; — October 15, 2021

During the #metoo movement we witnessed the rise of the call-out; a technique that used social media to amplify hitherto suppressed voices which in some cases lead to the toppling of sexually abusive men in power who couldn’t be held accountable any other way. However in recent years we’ve seen calling-out being co-opted to moralise within communities, and eventually become an unreflective method for bullying, dividing potential allies. As Jack Halberstam puts it: “as people ‘call each other out’ to a chorus of finger snapping, we seem to be rapidly losing all sense of perspective and instead of building alliances, we are dismantling hard fought for coalitions.” In Radical Sociability, Lou Drago, suggests that there’s importance in preserving the potency of this tool and introduces a new term, which imagines an alternative future where the Left is able to build resilient relationships and coalitions.

Drago first presented a version of these ideas in February 2020, before it was possible to anticipate the year’s upheavals or the urgency that we now face in uniting an ever more fractured Left and polarised society at large. As the super-weathly’s sole interest in exponential growth that relies on the exploitation of workers and the environment becomes increasingly exposed, we are presented with a unique opportunity to increase solidarity between all who suffer — knowingly or not — at the hands of capitalism. This talk during the programme, You got to get in to get out, will include the initial concept and expand upon the ways that this thinking has been shaped by the last year, and perhaps most importantly, some suggestions on how to mitigate the ills of call-out culture.

    infinity rug offers a moment where sound, collective learning and intimate care come together to forge a space of togetherness. You are invited to bring your own rug to contribute to a rug-constellation. Lay down and get cosy with us, drift off with us. Bringing the domestic to the public realm, we will tentatively explore new ways of being-together and offer a space for contemplation, rejuvenation and introspection.
Through the night until the morning, we will gently guide you through a soundscape of field recordings, ambient, experient and deep-mind music, interwoven with ceremonial performances, texts and poetry, scents, textiles and food offerings.


infinity rug is a collaboration between myself and marum (and oftentimes others too). The first iteration was in 2021 at Festival Transart in Bozano thanks to the kind invitation of Isabel Lewis and since that we have hosted over a dozen more in varying locations, scales, and durations around Europe.     It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal neoliberal mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.
In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence maintains that nothing in this world is eternal.
Regardless of one's point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.
Each month we invite an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.
Transience on Cashmere Radio began in 2017 and is ongoing.
Covers 1 - 30 are from  Angela de la Serna, except for 25 which is from  Sybil. Photographs 31 - 41 are from  Janusz Lorent, except from 37 with is a digital colourfield work by  Ligovskoï. Photographs 42 - current are from  Micki Rosi Richter, with the exception of 43 which is another digital colourfield work by Ligovskoï.

“Time exists for us because we experience tensions and their resolutions.” Philosopher Susanne Langer, claims that the particular building-up of tensions, and “their ways of breaking or diminishing or merging into longer and greater tensions, make for a vast variety of temporal forms.” In most Western music, we generally listen within a linear framework, recalling what has already been heard and anticipating what will come next. Often without ever having heard a piece of music before it is possible to anticipate the next phrase because of how it was suggested earlier in the piece. Johnathan Kramer introduced the concept of vertical time in music after experiencing a performance of Erik Satie’s Vexations. Kramer encountered a feeling of having exhausted the information content of the work and experienced “getting bored, becoming imprisoned by a hopelessly repetitious piece.” The experience of time became slower and slower, threatening to stop. But through this boredom, Kramer discovered a different mode of listening. By being liberated from considering the music’s past and future, the present expanded; suddenly it was possible to enter the “vertical time of the piece.”
For the work Suspending Time: Meditations for accessing alternate space/time in music, Lou Drago speculates on various types of music which potentiate the experiencing of vertical or non-linear time. Guests are invited to lay down, close their eyes and attempt to experience a suspension of time. A vector can be drawn between this alternate mode of listening to music and numerous meditation and mindfulness practices that similarly emphasise the importance of focusing on the present. As Lou Drago sees it, meditation can be used to obviate thought in order to alleviate oneself temporarily from the weight of self- consciousness and other anxieties. This work hypothesises that these two factors, meditation and non-linear listening, are interdependent. The experience of vertical time can have a meditative effect, yet effectively one must be meditating – be alleviated from conscious thought – to be able to experience time vertically.This work premiered in 2018 thanks to the kind invitation of Isabel Lewis and i’m grateful that it has since been hosted in several countries across Europe and internationally.

    During Lōemis Festival 2025, Berlin-based, Aotearoan artist Lou Drago hosted a new listening-occasion, (for Papatūānuku), in collaboration with local musicians Al Fraser and Erika Grant. Drago was in residency in Te Whanganui-a-Tara for a month continuing a body of research into listening to the more-than-human in the ocean and incorporating these sounds into music and this work was the first live sharing of this reseach. In addition to the unfderwater field recordings the music includes modular synthesis (Drago) gongs, Tibetan bowls, water harp (Grant) and taonga pūoro (Fraser). 

Beginning with locally foraged medicianal kawakawa tea, followed by a guided meditation, the listening occasion lasted over 120 minutes, offering guests an opportunity to dive deeply into relationship with the full body as an organ for listening and invites collective dreaming and hypnagogic states. This work, (for papatūānuku) is an offering to our Earth whose abundant energy flows through all life on this planet, animating all of the miraculous creatures seen and unseen. In Drago's words, "as i listen to the spirits of the water or hear the whispers of the winds, i am reminded again of our interdependency ~ that we are made of the same matter and depend on the earth fundamentally. There is grief in it, oh there is grief in it. What we have been doing to her and what we continue to do. Yet, this is why we gather, for all of those who cannot bear the weight of that, we bear it. May we gather together, to listen deeply, with each atom of our being, to feel that interdependence and go forth with newfound clarity and compassion."

The term 'listening-occasion' refers to Drago's sonic live art practice that weaves together the lineages of Isabel Lewis who coined the term 'Occasions' — a celebratory gathering of things, people, plants, dances and scents — and Pauline Oliveros who coined the term 'deep-listening' — the conscious attention on what is being heard.

Music makes time audible - Susanne Langer

The sound work, Still, produced in the context of the solo exhibition, Tills, by Raphaël Lecoquierre can be seen as a development of Drago's ongoing work-research into Suspending Time. Whereas previous iterations of Suspending Time were positioned within Drago's live art practice, or as they call them "listening occasions" this new work has been produced for the specific context of the installation in mind, and is listenable thorughout the duration of the 6 month exhibition at Casino Luxembourg. In this work, they concentrate on creating a feeling of vastness within the sound, that a listener may get lost in and have it potentiate an experiencing of vertical or non-linear time. What may appear to be repetitive or non-moving, is in fact moving at glacial pace. Guests are invited to lay down in Lecoquierre’s sublime installation and listen attentively to experience a suspension of time.

This could be imagined as an invitation to pull up from the dirt all that has grown and does not serve
us, so we are able to plant new seeds which, with careful attendance, will grow into the societies and
futures that we want to see. For the second iteration of Interventions on Frequency, artist and
community organiser Lou Drago is joined by performer and choreographer Jules Petru Fricker to
present Prismatic Fragments I: duvetdomme, a listening-occassion which tackles notions of care,
intimacy and sociability.

						
The recent research of Lou Drago seeks potential affinities between all of those who are systemically
and culturally oppressed in an earnest attempt to inspire a renewed sense of collective imagination
among a largely disorganised or disaffected and fragmented so-called 'Left.' To survive during
apocalyptic times, Drago believes we must draw on many far flung strings of intelligence from the
undercommons, crucially; not only logical intelligence, also somatic, emotional, spiritual and energetic.
This collective or, – prismatic – intelligence could be seen as a way forward for those wanting to shape
change both collectively and personally. Since 2020 they have been writing and speaking about these
concepts, as a guide toward enacting a more 'radical sociability.’ Radical Sociability could be described
as a way of reimagining social relations outside of racial capitalism and identity-based logic for
collective liberation. The listening-occasion, Prismatic Fragments I: duvetdomme, combines this more
theoretical/experiential research together with Drago's ongoing sound and live-art practice. During this
listening-occasion they create an intimate environment for reflecting on these topics, with the support
of music chosen specifically for its comforting and narrative qualities.For this occasion, they are joined
by the performance artist Jules Petru Fricker in a collective care ritual to begin the Prismatic Fragments
series as they mean to continue; with ease, subtlety, and care for the artists to continue their radical
sociability warriorship from a more deeply grounded place. duvetdomme is a collective work spawned
together with Maria F. Scaroni, marum, Fricker and Drago.

						
The term 'listening-occasion' describes Drago's live-art format, the compound being inspired by their
friend and collaborator Isabel Lewis' concept of 'Occasions' together with Pauline Oliveros' term
'deep-listening'.

					
This new work was created for the Interventions on Frequency performance series curated by Antoine
Simeão Schalk and Danniel Tostes at Migros Museum, Zürich throughout 2023.

Interventions on Frequency is a performance series with a focus on sound practices, enabling
conversations on their capacity to stimulate forms of dialogue between individualised bodies. It
features works of different artists, who represent different positions to urgent questions around race, gender and sexuality. Pursuing on the reflection on radical care, the series of performances dwells into
the realms of poetry, science-fiction, affect and club culture. Following on texts by Silvia Federici, the
importance of the commons when discussing care is evoked. We characterise it as a movement or as a
relation between bodies, hence the importance of community.

From dusk to dawn, the artists engage in a ritual related to presence and transgender experience. &#38;nbsp;

As contemporaries in art and queer kinship, Cassils and SJ Norman arrive to this action as trans people who came of age in the shadow of absence: a pre-internet generation, marked by the social rupture of the AIDS crisis and its concomitant currents of religious and medical violence. The pair’s shared experiences of disorientation form the work’s central interrogation.&#38;nbsp; 

As members of a generation of trans people who found no reflection of themselves in the culture at large, devoid of the vernaculars of identification, the artists begin with the question: How does one remain present in a body so shaped by absence? How does a body reclaim itself from the tides of history and the anxieties of an uncertain future? How might two trans bodies hold each other accountable to their present awareness? How might this tethering be understood as an act of love? a song of praise?  

This international premiere of “Devotion” will employ a ritualized knife play to bring the artists back into the loving embrace of trans masculine brotherhood and connection with the present moment. Cassils and Norman will sit from sunset to sunrise in a meditative state, each of them holding a sharpened blade. Utilizing the Anapanasati technique, the pair commit to the simple task of witnessing their own and each other’s breathing bodies. The ebb and flow of each artist’s awareness is mapped on the surface of the skin in the form of small incisions- one artist marking the other any time their focus strays. Far from a punitive act, this ritualised consent to rupture and be ruptured can be understood as a gesture of reverence for all a body can hold, and all it must relinquish.Throughout the performance Lou Drago will interpret creating a hybrid live/DJ soundscape.&#38;nbsp;

CASSILS is a transgender artist who makes their own body the material and protagonist of their performances. Cassils’s art contemplates the history(s) of LGBTQI+ violence, representation, struggle and survival. For the artist, performance is a form of social sculpture: Drawing from the idea that bodies are formed in relation to forces of power and social expectations, Cassils work investigates historical contexts to examine the present moment. Cassils has had recent solo exhibitions at HOME Manchester, Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Perth Institute for Contemporary Arts, Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, NYC; Institute for Contemporary Art, AU; Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts; School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston; Bemis Center, Omaha; MU Eindhoven, Netherlands.

SJ Norman is a cross-disciplinary artist and writer. He is a non-binary transmasculine person and a diasporic Koori of Wiradjuri descent, born on Gadigal land. Norman’s work centres the corporeal and the inter-corporeal: he inhabits and disrupts the prevailing vocabularies of performance as a queer/ed Indigenous body, addressing that body as both site and material. He utilises ephemeral, process-based and long-durational practices as a means of antagonising the prevailing economies of colonial spectatorship and capital value, as well as a means to excavate and elevate embodied knowledges.

    This work was made to be listened to in transit on the S-bahn between Membra(I)nes' conference sites in Leipzig and Halle, Germany. Those listening from afar are of course welcome to listen while in transit anywhere.

During the transition of the Membra(I)nes conference from Leipzig to Halle, Drago invites you to join a deep-listening sonic journey. Although not often used as such, the occasion of being in transit can offer an opportune interlude to rest the intellectual-mind and refocus one's attention through a different kind of embodied attentive listening. Connecting the psyche and soma through imagination, Drago’s work created precisely for this change of site within the membra(i)nes conference invites you to listen deeper, to sound, to the body and to intuition.

This site specific audio work consists mostly of field recordings and spoken word. The audio includes fragments read from Pauline Oliveros' 'Quantum Listening' and Kris Beaghton's 'Fuck Theory'.&#38;nbsp;
